Brawl of the Wild: Celebrating 123 Years of Bobcat Pride and Rivalry

Today, November 23, 2024, marks the 123rd edition of the "Brawl of the Wild," the storied football rivalry between the Montana State University (MSU) Bobcats and the University of Montana (UM) Grizzlies. This annual clash, deeply embedded in Montana's cultural fabric, is more than just a game—it's a celebration of tradition, community, and state pride.

A Glimpse into History

The inaugural Cat-Griz game was played on November 26, 1897, in Bozeman, where the Grizzlies claimed victory with an 18-6 win over the Bobcats. Since then, this rivalry has evolved into one of the oldest and most hotly contested in college football. As of November 2023, the Grizzlies lead the series with 75 wins, compared to the Bobcats’ 42 victories, and there have been 5 ties.

Every year, the venue alternates between Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman and Washington–Grizzly Stadium in Missoula, giving both fan bases a chance to experience the electrifying atmosphere on their home turf.

Since 2001, the victor has taken home the Great Divide Trophy, a symbol of both the competition and the geographical divide between the two universities.

Community Spirit and Traditions

The "Brawl of the Wild" goes beyond the gridiron. It fosters community engagement and generosity, particularly through the annual food drive: “Can the Griz” in Bozeman and “Can the Cats” in Missoula. These friendly competitions encourage fans to donate nonperishable food items and funds to support local food banks. While today’s game is the main event, the results of these food drives benefit thousands across Montana.
