Friday, October 23: How to Spend Your First Day
Check-in runs from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Strand Union Building, 765 West Grant Street, where registered families pick up their Parent and Family Weekend lanyard and pass. If you cannot make check-in hours, your student can pick up your materials on your behalf. From there, the day offers several directions. The Museum of the Rockies, one of the finest natural history museums in the country and right next door to Bobcat Stadium, is included with registration and offers free admission throughout the weekend. Three campus galleries are open for self-guided exploration: the Helen E. Copeland Gallery in Haynes Hall, the School of Architecture gallery in Cheever Hall, and the Exit Gallery in the Strand Union Building. Self-guided walking tours of campus and a Bozeman driving tour are available for families who want to get oriented to both the university and the city.
At 1:30 PM, registered families are invited to Photos with Spirit at Alumni Plaza for the chance to take a photo with MSU’s iconic Bobcat statue. At 3:30 PM, the Stand Up and Cheer Welcome Reception kicks off in Strand Ballroom A, with heavy appetizers, drinks, the chance to win prizes including football tickets and Cat-Griz tickets, and an opportunity to meet other Bobcat families and MSU staff and students. For families with an adventurous spirit, the Outdoor Recreation Center is running a Bear Safety Clinic at 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM at the Rental Shop at 1401 West Lincoln Street, a one-hour session on best practices for staying safe in bear country. Cost is $10 and registration is required.
Saturday, October 24: Game Day and the Heart of the Weekend
Saturday is the centerpiece of Parent and Family Weekend 2026. The Alpha Omicron Pi Run for the Roses 5K and one-mile race begins at 9:00 AM from Montana Hall, with registration available online. A Parent and Family Weekend Pilates class runs at 10:00 AM in Studio 1 of the Student Wellness Center, open to all fitness levels and requiring separate registration. The Parent and Family Tailgate runs from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Bobcat Stadium at 1 Bobcat Circle, with a local DJ, food provided, and drinks available for purchase.
The football game, Bobcats versus Weber State, kicks off at 1:00 PM at Bobcat Stadium. Football tickets are sold out through standard channels, but the Bobcat Ticket Office at 406-994-2287 or [email protected] may have limited options. If tickets are unavailable, the Honey Hole and Dry Fly Saloon, Rocking R Bar, and Old Chicago on North 19th Avenue are all recommended for watching the Bobcats in a lively game-day atmosphere. Saturday evening brings MSU Volleyball at Shroyer Gymnasium at 7:00 PM, with the Bobcats hosting Idaho State. Volleyball tickets are available through the Bobcat Athletics ticket portal and this is a great opportunity to support another Bobcat team in a more intimate venue.
Sunday, October 25: One Last Morning in Bozeman
Sunday offers a gentle close to the weekend with the Parents Weekend Beginner Hike departing from the Outdoor Recreation Center Rental Shop at 9:00 AM and heading to Peets Hill, one of Bozeman’s most beloved local trails and one of the best views in the city. The hike runs from 9:00 AM to noon, costs $10, and registration is required. It is a genuinely beautiful way for students and families to spend one last October morning together before the drive home.
What Else Is Happening in Bozeman This Weekend
Bozeman in late October is one of the most atmospheric times of year to experience the city, and Parent and Family Weekend coincides with some genuinely fun local events worth working into the itinerary. The Anderson School Haunted House runs both Friday and Saturday evenings and has become one of Bozeman’s most beloved Halloween traditions. Haunted History Tours of downtown Bozeman offer an atmospheric walking experience both nights. The Bozeman Maze and the Montana Corn Maze are both running through the end of October for families with younger siblings or anyone who wants a seasonal outdoor afternoon. The Fall Festival at Gallatin Valley Botanical is a beautiful harvest experience that captures the agricultural richness of the Gallatin Valley at its October best.
Where to Eat in Bozeman During Parent and Family Weekend
Bozeman’s restaurant scene is genuinely exceptional for a city of this size, and Parent and Family Weekend is one of the busiest dining weekends of the fall. Reservations are strongly recommended at the best spots. Carlisle Bozeman on East Mendenhall is the go-to for a celebratory dinner, with Montana elk, wagyu beef, and an impressive wine cellar. Blackbird Kitchen on Main Street delivers wood-fired Italian in a warm, lively room. Revelry on North Tracy handles everything from pizza to bison bolognese in a setting that works for groups of any size. Bitterroot Bistro on South Willson is a beautiful intimate option worth reserving well in advance. And for a more casual evening, the Honey Hole and Dry Fly Saloon and the Rocking R Bar both deliver great atmosphere and are particularly lively on game weekend.
A Note for Visiting Families Who Are Thinking About More Than the Weekend
Every year, Parent and Family Weekend brings families to Bozeman who arrive to see their student and leave thinking about something else entirely. The mountains. The downtown. The quality of life. The question of what it might look like to have a home here, whether as a second home within reach of their student during their college years, or as the foundation of a future move to a place that genuinely surprised them.
If that conversation is beginning for your family this weekend, we would love to be a resource. Reserve Properties has represented buyers and sellers in this market for more than 25 years, and nobody knows the Bozeman real estate landscape more intimately.
